Folate manages cell shape during neurulation.

چکیده
Patents from papers both basic and applied Public funding for research depends on the idea that the resulting knowledge translates into socially valuable outcomes, such as medicines. Such linkages are easier to assert than to prove. Li et al. studied 27 years of grantlevel funding by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. About 10% of grants are directly cited by patents, suggesting some technological application, and 30% of grants are cited in research articles that are then cited in patents. Five percent of grants result in papers cited by patents for successfully approved drugs, compared with less than 1% that are cited directly by such patents. These patterns hold regardless of whether the research is more basic or applied. —BW

Folate receptor 1 is necessary for neural plate cell apical constriction during Xenopus neural tube formation.
Folate supplementation prevents up to 70% of neural tube defects (NTDs), which result from a failure of neural tube closure during embryogenesis. The elucidation of the mechanisms underlying folate action has been challenging. This study introduces Xenopus laevis as a model to determine the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in folate action during neural tube formation. We show that kn...
متن کاملLRP2 mediates folate uptake in the developing neural tube.
The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-related protein 2 (LRP2) is a multifunctional cell-surface receptor expressed in the embryonic neuroepithelium. Loss of LRP2 in the developing murine central nervous system (CNS) causes impaired closure of the rostral neural tube at embryonic stage (E) 9.0. Similar neural tube defects (NTDs) have previously been attributed to impaired folate metabolism...

متن کاملCytoskeletal mechanics of neurulation: insights obtained from computer simulations.
The morphogenetic movements associated with the process of neurulation have been the subject of much investigation during the last one hundred years. A plethora of experimental evidence has been generated regarding the forces that drive this seemingly simple process, and many theories about the mechanics of the process have been proposed. Recent computer simulations have proved useful for evalu...
متن کاملMechanisms of neurulation: traditional viewpoint and recent advances.
In this review article, the traditional viewpoint of how neurulation occurs is evaluated in light of recent advances. This has led to the formulation of the following fundamentals: (1) neurulation, specifically neural plate shaping and bending, is a multifactorial process resulting from forces both intrinsic and extrinsic to the neural plate; (2) neurulation is driven by both changes in neuroep...
